**Yes, Coinbase is legitimate**, and it's one of the most regulated exchanges in the US. It's publicly traded, has been [in the S&P 500](https://thedefiant.io/news/markets/coinbase-to-enter-s-p-500-on-19-replacing-discover-financial-7b51cd7e) since May 2025, and holds an [EU license under the MiCA rules](https://www.theblock.co/post/359141/coinbase-mica-license-europe). **But "safe" depends on what you're worried about.** Coins you hold on Coinbase aren't [FDIC- or SIPC-insured](https://www.coinbase.com/legal/insurance). A May 2025 insider data breach exposed personal data for [69,461 customers](https://www.theregister.com/2025/05/21/coinbase_confirms_insider_breach_affects/). And impersonation scams aimed at Coinbase users cost an [estimated $300 million or more a year](https://nobsbitcoin.com/coinbase-users-lose-over-300m-per-year-to-social-engineering-scams-zachxbt).

## Coinbase safety scorecard

How Coinbase does on each risk, and what it means for you:

- **Company failure:** Large and regulated; nothing public points to insolvency. **For you:** Low, but it isn't zero. Coinbase lost money in the first half of 2026.
- **Hack of Coinbase's own wallets:** Crime insurance covers a portion of the coins it holds against theft. **For you:** Low.
- **Your account getting taken over:** Common; insurance does not cover stolen logins. **For you:** Your biggest risk. Use a hardware security key.
- **Leak of your personal data:** The 2025 insider breach exposed ID images, addresses and phone numbers. **For you:** Medium. Leaked data makes scams more convincing.
- **Account freezes and slow support:** A frequent complaint in reviews. **For you:** Medium. You could lose access when you need it.
- **What happens to your coins in a bankruptcy:** The user agreement treats them as your property ("financial assets"). **For you:** Better than in 2022, but not tested in court.

## Is it safe to keep money on Coinbase?

Coinbase is fine for money you're actively trading, but it isn't a bank account. **US dollars** held at partner banks can get [FDIC pass-through coverage up to $250,000](https://www.coinbase.com/legal/insurance) per depositor, though Coinbase may hold customer cash in US Treasuries or money-market funds instead. **Bitcoin and other coins** have no FDIC or SIPC protection, and Coinbase's crime insurance doesn't cover losses from someone getting into your account. The practical answer: keep only what you're actively trading on Coinbase, and move long-term savings to [a wallet you control](https://www.swanbitcoin.com/education/best-bitcoin-wallet/).

## Coinbase security timeline, 2024 to 2026

The key events behind Coinbase's safety record, in order:

- **December 2024:** criminals start bribing overseas customer-support contractors to pull customer records ([The Register](https://www.theregister.com/2025/05/21/coinbase_confirms_insider_breach_affects/)).
- **May 11 and 15, 2025:** Coinbase finds the breach, then discloses it. 69,461 customers are affected.
- **May 2025:** Coinbase joins the [S&P 500](https://thedefiant.io/news/markets/coinbase-to-enter-s-p-500-on-19-replacing-discover-financial-7b51cd7e).
- **August 2025:** the breach class actions are [combined into one federal case in New York](https://harrismartin.com/publications/27/MDL/articles/69831/jpml-centralizes-coinbase-data-breach-actions-in-ny/).
- **June 2026:** Coinbase [begins rolling out Transfer Protections](https://www.valuethemarkets.com/cryptocurrency/news/coinbase-introduces-transfer-protections-for-enhanced-security-in-cryptocurrency-transactions) (time delays, daily limits and trusted-contact approval for outgoing transfers).
- **July 22, 2026:** Coinbase's [US user agreement](https://www.coinbase.com/legal/user_agreement/united_states) is updated; it treats your coins as a "financial asset" held for you.
- **July 2026:** a ruling says the support contractor, TaskUs, [must face negligence claims](https://news.bloombergtax.com/financial-accounting/coinbase-contractor-cant-shake-all-claims-tied-to-data-breach).
- **October 6–9, 2026:** Coinbase says it [identified more than 65 active scam victims](https://ministryofcyberaffairs.com/news/65-victims-415k-4-days-inside-coinbase-s-takedown-with-the-fbi-and-nca-9570ffe7-e5b8-4dd5-b9ae-c081c927c455) during a UK and US scam-disruption operation.

## Has Coinbase been hacked? The 2025 data breach

No funds were taken directly from Coinbase in its biggest recent incident, but customer data was. Starting in December 2024, criminals bribed customer-support contractors overseas to pull customer records. Coinbase found the breach on May 11, 2025, and disclosed it on May 15 ([The Register](https://www.theregister.com/2025/05/21/coinbase_confirms_insider_breach_affects/), May 21, 2025).

- **Customers affected:** 69,461.
- **What leaked:** names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, masked bank details, ID images and account data such as balances and transaction history ([BleepingComputer](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/coinbase-says-recent-data-breach-impacts-69-461-customers/)).
- **What didn't leak:** passwords, seed phrases and private keys. No funds were taken directly from Coinbase.
- **Response:** Coinbase refused a $20 million ransom demand, offered a $20 million reward for information instead, and estimated its costs at $180 million to $400 million.
- **Lawsuits:** the class actions were [combined into one federal case in New York](https://harrismartin.com/publications/27/MDL/articles/69831/jpml-centralizes-coinbase-data-breach-actions-in-ny/) before Judge Edgardo Ramos. In July 2026, a ruling said the support contractor, TaskUs, [must face negligence claims](https://news.bloombergtax.com/financial-accounting/coinbase-contractor-cant-shake-all-claims-tied-to-data-breach). No settlement has been reported as of October 19, 2026.

## Is my Bitcoin insured on Coinbase?

- **Bitcoin and other coins: no FDIC or SIPC protection.** Coinbase has a crime insurance policy that [covers a portion of the coins](https://www.coinbase.com/legal/insurance) across its storage systems against theft. It doesn't cover losses from someone getting into *your* account. Coinbase says it "will endeavor to make you whole," but warns losses may exceed its insurance (as of October 19, 2026).
- **US dollars:** cash held at partner banks can get [FDIC pass-through coverage up to $250,000](https://www.coinbase.com/legal/insurance) per depositor. But Coinbase may instead invest customer dollars in US Treasuries or money-market funds, and says you shouldn't assume your cash is held one way or the other.

## What happens to my Bitcoin if Coinbase goes bankrupt?

Coinbase's [US user agreement](https://www.coinbase.com/legal/user_agreement/united_states) (updated July 22, 2026) says each supported coin in your Coinbase wallet is treated as a "financial asset" under Division 8 of the California Uniform Commercial Code. In plain terms, Coinbase holds it for you, and it should not be part of Coinbase's own estate. That's a big improvement on 2022, when Coinbase warned customers could be treated as unsecured creditors. It has not been tested in a Coinbase bankruptcy.

## Is Coinbase a scam?

No. Coinbase itself is a legitimate company, but **scams that impersonate Coinbase are common**. On-chain investigator ZachXBT [estimated](https://nobsbitcoin.com/coinbase-users-lose-over-300m-per-year-to-social-engineering-scams-zachxbt) that Coinbase users lose more than $300 million a year to fake "Coinbase support" calls, texts and emails. Coinbase support will never ask you to move your coins to a "safe wallet", share a recovery phrase or install remote-access software.

Coinbase does work with police on these scams. During an October 6–9, 2026 operation hosted by the UK's National Crime Agency with the US Justice Department, Coinbase said it [identified more than 65 active scam victims and stopped more than $415,000 in potential losses](https://ministryofcyberaffairs.com/news/65-victims-415k-4-days-inside-coinbase-s-takedown-with-the-fbi-and-nca-9570ffe7-e5b8-4dd5-b9ae-c081c927c455).

## What reviews say

Coinbase rates [4.0 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 23,266 reviews](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/coinbase.com) (as of October 19, 2026). Reviews are split: 45% are 5-star and 43% are 1-star. Negative reviews mostly mention locked or frozen accounts, slow support and verification delays.

## How to use Coinbase more safely

1. Use a **hardware security key** (such as a YubiKey) or passkey instead of text-message two-factor codes.
2. Turn on **address allowlisting** so withdrawals can only go to addresses you approved.
3. Turn on **Transfer Protections** if your account has them. Coinbase [began rolling out](https://www.valuethemarkets.com/cryptocurrency/news/coinbase-introduces-transfer-protections-for-enhanced-security-in-cryptocurrency-transactions) time delays, daily limits and trusted-contact approval for outgoing transfers in June 2026; it may not be available to every user yet.
4. Never call a phone number from a text or email. Go to coinbase.com directly.
5. Keep only what you're actively trading on Coinbase.
6. Move long-term savings to a wallet you control, ideally [multisig](https://www.swanbitcoin.com/education/how-to-set-up-swan-vault/) or [cold storage](https://www.swanbitcoin.com/education/bitcoin-cold-storage/).

## Swan's take

Coinbase is a real, regulated business, and for most people an exchange hack isn't the biggest danger. The real risks are social: leaked data, impersonation scams and accounts that get frozen. Bitcoin in your own custody can't be frozen by an exchange. Swan is Bitcoin-only. With Swan Vault, its collaborative 2-of-3 multisig, you hold two keys offline and Swan manages the third for recovery, so you keep control without going it alone.
